On November 23, 2004 fans finally got an insightinto what was coming from the iTunes store - a 'Digital Box Set' of U2Material some 446 tracks strong, which could be downloaded with a clickof a mouse (once you paid for them of course). The songs includedstretch U2's entire career from early demo recordings to the newest album,this set does a very good job of showing us pretty much everything U2 hasever done. Also included is a .pdf file which lists the albums andsingles throughout U2's career with cover images from the various releases.

The set is called 'The Complete U2' and many fans will argue the titleis misleading. First several songs are just plain missing from theset, most of these covers of other artists work over the years. Butsome of these songs are favorites of the fan community, and their abscensehas been noted. There is an amusing fan created iMix in the US iTunes store called The inComplete U2 (link requires iTunes) which contains tracks not in the box set which can be bought on iTunes itself.

Another issue is that 48 tracks are just duplicates of what is alreadyavailable elsewhere in the set, leaving this 446 song set down to only398 unique songs. What has occurred is in an effort to be completesongs like 'Beautiful Day' which never had a separate single mix, are includedwith both the 'All That You Can't Leave Behind' album as well as with the'Beautiful Day' single. It is a little disappointing to realize youjust grabbed 50 songs from the interent you didn't have to to get the completecontents. This is probably due to the fact that at this point you cannot tag a single file to count for multiple releases - hence if someone just wanted to listen to the 'Beautiful Day' singles they may be dissipointed to have the title track and most the live tracks not represented.

U2 aren’t the only victims – album downloads on Apple’s iTunes store are dwindling as fans turn to streaming services, with Apple’s $3bn (£1.8bn) acquisition – Dr Dre’s Beats Music. If you wish to try some other websites to download torrents, there are many other alternative websites. One of them is The Pirate Bay, which is currently the world’s leading torrent site. However, it can be hard to get used to a new torrent site. So it’s really up to you whether to use the KickAss Torrents new sites or not. Chosen for their undisputed ability to capture the imaginations of their audiences, the artists were given complete creative freedom to showcase their personal responses to U2’s music, through a series of part-animated, part live action films. The result is an exhilarating display of diversity in approach, style and commentary.

The highlight of the set is the rare material for the U2 fan who haseverything else. Unfortunately that is also why this set is beinga little controversial - those who have everything have to buy it all asecond time to get 10 - 15 new tracks they want because they are not availableoutside of the set. Adding to the frustration is the limited geographythat these sets are available to, as well as frustration when people findthey are unable to install the iTunes software to even see the tracklistingbecause they are on an unsupported operating system (Windows 95, 98 etc.)

'Outof Control' live from Boston in 1981, originally released as a b-side to'I Will Follow' is not listed among these tracks as the entire concertis included in this box set. Unfortunately 'A Day Without Me' and'I Will Follow' are not different on the early singles, and thus theirinclusion here is completely unnecessary as they are also inclulded inthe Boy album bundle. Why pay twice for the same song? Theother tracks are all different versions than appear on the albums.

Missing Tracks: There were three versions of Love Comes Tumblingwhich were released, and although I can't be sure which is available herewithout listening, I'm willing to bet it's not the alternate vocal fromthe Australian pressings. Likewise the different live vocal mix of A Sort of Homecoming from thoseAustralian pressings is not included. Other tracks from this erawhich could have been included but weren't? Comments: Here in my opinion is where the 'Digital Box Set' reallystarts to hurt. It was disappointing to see that various 'cover'songs are left out of this set like 'Dancing Barefoot', 'Everlasting Love'and 'Unchained Melody'. The lack of those songs in this set reallymake this less than a complete capture of their work. It's been mentionedthat these songs have likely not made the cut due to the liscensing agreementsthat would be required to present another artist's work on iTunes. This will again blacken this set when the covers during the 'Achtung Baby'singles don't make it. And like before, do we really need the Singleversion of 'Desire'? The only thing different from the album versionis Adam's comment at the start is missing. 'All I Want is You' isalso the same as the album version and is unecessarily duplicated twicein this set.
Missing Tracks: 'Desire (9:23 Hollywood Remix)' from variouspromos,the alternate versions of 'When Love Comes to Town (Live from theKingdom Mix)' and 'God Part II (Hard Metal Dance Mix) from the promos. Both the long and the short edits of 'Dancing Barefoot' and 'EverlastingLove' and 'Unchained Melody' originally from the AllI Want is You Single. Other songs from this era that could havebeen included? 'Pride' was released on the RainbowWarriors compilation and it was a slightly different edit of the liveperformance from Rattle and Hum. Comments: Finally something that U2 fans are going to be droolingover - a collection of rare songs some of which have never appeared inany form before. 'Levitate', 'Love You Like Mad', 'Smile', 'FlowerChild', 'Beautiful Ghost', 'Xanax and Wine', 'Native Son' and alternateversions of 'All Because of You', 'Yahweh' and 'Sometimes You Can't Makeit On Your Own' are all tracks which have never appeared before which gettheir first release through iTunes. They are also exclusive to the'Digital Box Set' and cannot be purchased separately as you can with manyof the tunes. To me this is a bit of a slap in the face of the longtime fan who would have pretty much everything else in this set. Spend your money, buy the entire set to get 10 songs you don't have already. $15 a song? I don't think so. The other 'rarities' are somewhatlaughable as most of them have had wide release and are still in print. 'Jesus Christ', 'Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)' and 'Night and Day(Twilight Remix)' have all appeared on widely released compilations. 'Stateless' was taken from the MillionDollar Hotel Soundtrack which most fans would have. The shortenedform of 'Bass Trap', 'Salome' and 'Numb' were released on the double discversions of the Best Ofs which are also still widely available. The'Numb (Radio Edit)' track is the sole track that is difficult to find,with promo CDs contianing this track going for big prices on eBay.

Comments: Over the years almost all of these tracks have shown upas B-Sides of singles. As late as 1998, U2 was still mining thisshow for b-sides. It's nice to finally have them all together inone spot with one mastering job however, well other than the half dozendifferent bootlegs of this particular show.

Comments: Never before officially released these make for a greataddition to the set. But wouldn't it have been nice for them to includedmore instead of all the duplicate tracks found throughout the set? These tracks have been widely available on bootleg recordings for years.
